How to Remove Stubborn Stains from Carpet

Maintaining clean and presentable carpets is essential in any corporate, school, office, or government building. Carpets often serve as the first impression of your facility’s professionalism and cleanliness. Unfortunately, they are also prone to stains from coffee spills, ink, grease, and more. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help facility managers tackle these stubborn stains effectively while preserving the carpet’s longevity.

Understanding Carpet Fibers

Before attempting to remove stains, it’s essential to understand the type of carpet you’re dealing with. Commercial carpets are typically made from nylon, polypropylene (olefin), wool, or blends. Each fiber reacts differently to cleaning agents, so ensure you’re using the right solution to avoid damage.

  • Nylon: This type of carpet can be solution-dyed or topically dyed. Solution-dyed means the color goes through 100% of the fiber, which is most common in commercial spaces. It can withstand more aggressive cleaning chemistries and processes. Topically dyed means the color sits on the surface of the nylon. You must treat a topically dyed fiber with greater care and ensure pH-neutral chemistries are used to avoid damaging the carpet.
  • Polypropylene: This synthetic fiber is typically solution-dyed, stain-resistant, and easy to clean.
  • Wool: This natural fiber is known for its durability, softness, and natural fire retardancy. Because wool is topically dyed, it must be cleaned carefully with neutral cleaning chemicals to avoid damaging the fibers.

General Carpet Stain Removal Tips

  1. Act Quickly: The sooner you address a stain, the better. Blot a wet stain to remove as much of it as you can. This will help prevent it from spreading.
  2. Apply Chemical: Apply a general-purpose carpet spotter approved by the Carpet and Rug Institute per the manufacturer’s use directions. For ease of use, we recommend SCI’s NXT Professional Carpet Spotter.
  3. Allow the chemical to dwell per the manufacturer’s directions, and gently agitate the stain with a soft nylon brush. For larger stains, work from the outside to the middle.
  4. Blot with a microfiber cloth to remove the stain.
  5. Repeat steps 3-4 until the stain is entirely removed.

Common Stains and How to Remove Them

Coffee and Tea Stains

  1. Blot the spill with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
  2. Use a carpet spotter designed to remove coffee/tea (tannin) based stains. For approved spotters, visit Carpet and Rug Institute.
  3. Apply the solution to the stain and allow it to dwell properly. Allow the chemical to dwell per the manufacturer’s directions, and gently agitate the stain with a soft nylon brush.  For larger stains, work from the outside to the middle.
  4. Blot with a microfiber cloth to remove the stain.
  5. Repeat if the stain still exists.

Ink, Grease, and Petroleum Stains

  1. Use a carpet spotter designed to remove the petroleum/ink stains. For approved spotters, visit Carpet and Rug Institute.
  2. Apply the solution to the stain. Avoid oversaturating the area, as solvents can damage backing layers.
  3. Blot with a microfiber cloth until the stain lifts, then rinse with water.

Advanced Carpet Cleaning Techniques

For older or particularly stubborn stains, consider professional-grade solutions:

  • Hot Water Extraction: Commonly known as steam cleaning, this method is excellent for deep stains and overall carpet rejuvenation.
  • Encapsulation Cleaning: Ideal for high-traffic areas, encapsulation traps dirt in a crystallized form, making it easy to vacuum away.
  • Spot Cleaning Machines: Portable devices can deliver targeted cleaning for isolated stains.

Preventative Carpet Maintenance

  • Regular Vacuuming: Frequent vacuuming prevents dirt from embedding into carpet fibers.
  • Use Mats and Runners: Place mats at entry points and high-traffic zones to reduce dirt and moisture accumulation.
  • Schedule Professional Cleanings: A regular deep-cleaning schedule ensures your carpets remain stain-free and extend their lifespan.
